Chalkboards

The Druid was my neighborhood pub when I lived in Cambridge. Mikey, the owner, asked me to create artwork for the outdoor slate chalkboard facing the sidewalk. I largely had free rein to decorate it in any way I saw fit, the only stipulation being that he did not want cliché Irish art - no leprechauns or pots of gold. He wanted work that was original, expressive and advertised its biggest selling points, fish & chips, and weekly Irish Music sessions.

The challenge was that it was a real piece of slate affixed to the building.  The curved contour made some compositions challenging  and I worked on a ladder to access it. To insure the best results and longevity, I used Prismacolor's nu-pastel. I made many illustrations over the years and regularly tailored the imagery and color themes to match the season, while tucking a Guinness in there somewhere.
